What Is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is the numeric label assigned to every device or service that connects to the internet. When your browser requests a page, the server needs an address to send the response back to — that address is your public IP. The banner at the top of this page shows yours right now.
IPv4 vs IPv6
There are two versions of the Internet Protocol in active use:
| IPv4 | IPv6 | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | 32-bit dotted quad | 128-bit colon-separated hex |
| Example | 104.16.132.229 |
2606:4700:4700::1111 |
| Address space | ~4.3 billion addresses (exhausted) | ~340 undecillion addresses |
| This tool | Supports both, including hostname resolution to IPv4 | |
How IP Geolocation Works
IP addresses are allocated in blocks to regional internet registries (RIRs like RIPE NCC or ARIN), which assign them to organizations — ISPs, cloud providers, enterprises. Geolocation databases such as MaxMind GeoLite2 aggregate these registry records, routing data, and user-contributed corrections to map IP ranges to locations. ASN databases do the same for the organizations that announce address blocks via BGP.
Accuracy caveat: country-level accuracy is typically 95-99%, but city-level results are less precise. The coordinates usually point to the ISP's registered office or network hub, not the actual device. IP geolocation is a best estimate — it is not GPS.
Why DevOps Engineers Check IP Addresses
- Firewall allowlists — before granting a partner or vendor access, verify their egress IP actually resolves to the organization they claim.
- Verifying egress IPs — services behind NAT or egress gateways present a shared public IP; confirm which one your workloads appear as before registering it with a third-party API.
- CDN and Cloudflare debugging — compare the client IP your origin server sees against the CDN edge forwarding headers to chase caching or rate-limit issues.
- Geo-restricted APIs — many providers gate endpoints by source country; an IP lookup tells you whether your CI pipeline or proxy will pass the check.
- GDPR data residency — for EU workloads, knowing where an IP geolocates (and who owns it) is the first step in a data-residency review.
What This IP Checker Shows
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| IP & Version | The resolved address and whether it is IPv4 or IPv6 |
| Country & EU Status | Country of registration, flagged against the 27 EU member states |
| Region & City | Sub-national region and city from the GeoLite2 City database |
| Latitude / Longitude | Approximate coordinates (ISP registered location, not GPS) |
| Timezone | IANA timezone associated with the IP's region |
| ASN & Organization | The autonomous system number announcing the address and its owner (ISP or cloud provider) |
| Reverse DNS (PTR) | The hostname mapped back to the IP, if the owner configured one |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is my IP address?
Your public IP address is shown automatically in the banner at the top of this page. It is the address your internet traffic appears to come from to every server you connect to. If you are behind a router, it is the router's address on your ISP's network, not your device's private address.
Is this IP checker free?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up, no API key, and no lookup limits. It runs entirely in your browser against our API.
Does the IP checker support IPv6?
Yes. Both IPv4 (for example 8.8.8.8) and IPv6 (for example 2606:4700:4700::1111) addresses are fully supported for geolocation, ASN, and reverse DNS lookups.
Can I look up any IP address, not just my own?
Yes. Enter any public IP address in the lookup form. Private, loopback, and reserved addresses (such as 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) are rejected because they are not routable on the public internet.
Can I look up a hostname instead of an IP address?
Yes. Enter a hostname such as one.one.one.one and it will be resolved to an IP address and then geolocated, with the resolved IP, ASN, organization, and reverse DNS shown in the results.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country-level accuracy is typically 95-99% using the MaxMind GeoLite2 databases. City-level accuracy is lower and coordinates usually reflect the ISP's registered location, not the device's physical GPS position. IP geolocation is a best estimate, never a precise location.
Is an IP address personal data under GDPR?
Yes. GDPR Recital 30 explicitly names online identifiers such as IP addresses as personal data when they can be linked to a natural person. If you process IP addresses (logs, analytics, rate limiting), you need a lawful basis and should treat them accordingly.
