🎯 The Role
We're looking for a Senior Staff Platform Engineer to set technical direction for our platform, not just build within it. This is the most senior IC role on the team: you'll own architecture for our most consequential, cross-org infrastructure initiatives, and be the person other senior and staff engineers look to when a design decision needs to hold up across every team that depends on it. Recent and current flagship work at this level includes leading the Istio service mesh rollout as single-threaded owner across the entire organization; shaping the architecture behind our Multi-Region Resilience Program; and owning the technical direction of our AI-enriched Service Catalog. You'll operate at the intersection of deep technical execution and org-wide influence, staying hands-on in critical code and infrastructure paths while setting the patterns other teams build on.
✅ Key Responsibilities
Own group-critical platform initiatives: Take single-threaded ownership of multi-quarter, cross-org programs — service mesh adoption across independent clusters and business units, multi-region resilience strategy, and foundational platform initiatives. Align systems and abstractions to long-term organizational strategy.
Set direction others build on: Define the architectural patterns, golden paths, and platform primitives (Istio mTLS/traffic policy, AI agent golden paths, MCP-backed service APIs) that other engineers implement against. Create shared components that improve delivery consistency across teams rather than one-off solutions per squad.
Lead through hands-on technical excellence: Stay deeply engaged in the hardest parts of the systems you own — debugging production incidents at the mesh layer, hardening migration tooling, resolving cross-team architectural conflicts — earning credibility through visible, high-quality technical work rather than through title alone.
Drive execution across organizational boundaries: Coordinate rollouts that depend on multiple engineering orgs contributing resources on a schedule (e.g., a named engineering champion per business unit for a service mesh migration). Anticipate systemic blockers — resourcing gaps, conflicting migration sequencing, environment drift between staging and production — and resolve them before they stall the program.
Own testing infrastructure strategy end-to-end: Serve as DRI for how engineering teams validate changes before production, spanning iteration environments, pre-prod confidence gates, and multi-service validation for cross-service changes.
Mentor Staff and Senior engineers: Coach engineers below you on system design, migration strategy, and how to navigate ambiguity in cross-team initiatives. Raise the technical bar of the org by example, not just by review.
Drive org-wide reduction of technical debt and cost: Lead large-scale infrastructure consolidations and migrations (CI/CD platform changes, artifact registry modernization, dependency upgrades) end-to-end, with the rollout discipline, cost modeling, and stakeholder communication that a multi-hundred-repo change demands.
Establish the metrics that prove platform investment works: Define and drive adoption of the leading indicators — adoption rate, incident trends, cost trajectory, developer sentiment — that let leadership see platform work as a business asset, not overhead.
📌 Required Qualifications
12+ years in Platform, Infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE roles, including demonstrated ownership of at least one initiative that spanned multiple teams or business units, not just a single team's roadmap.
Deep, production-proven expertise in Kubernetes/EKS, service mesh (Istio strongly preferred — mTLS, traffic shaping, sidecar architecture, multi-cluster rollout), and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or similar) at meaningful scale.
A track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical programs from architecture through execution — including the ability to produce the kind of cost/risk analysis and phased proposal that secures leadership buy-in and funding.
Experience debugging and resolving production incidents in distributed, multi-hop systems (e.g., proxy/sidecar-layer failures, cross-service auth issues, environment-specific config drift between staging and production).
⭐ Desirable Experience
Experience with multi-region Kubernetes deployments and disaster recovery strategies.
Experience with observability tools and practices for distributed systems.
Experience with CI/CD platforms and infrastructure modernization.
🎁 Benefits
Compensation: $250K – $280K • Offers Equity. H&H also offers a comprehensive Total Rewards package that may include an equity grant.
