Senior Database Reliability Engineer

Job Overview

As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE), you will be responsible for supporting all production database systems so that they run smoothly. We run MySQL 8.4 on Google Cloud Platform’s CloudSQL, alongside Google Cloud Spanner for globally distributed workloads. You will lead and take ownership of our core database systems to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.

The Role

This position is classified as REMOTE within the United States of America. A remote-first company with employees located throughout the U.S., Branch emphasizes transparency, accountability, and trust to create a collaborative environment where our product, engineering, marketing, customer support, customer success, and sales teams can all thrive together.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading and taking ownership of our core database systems to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
• Communicating critical data changes to the data warehousing team.
• Working alongside both engineering and data teams to shepherd schema changes from design to deployment to ensure architectural and downstream compatibility.
• Building and maintaining automated test and deployment data pipelines, including production level data testing at scale, with SRE and DevOps teams.
• Proactively working on detecting weak areas and incorporating them into automated monitoring and production alerting with our Cloud Ops teams.
• Documenting and automating processes to eliminate time spent on recurring tasks.
• Evaluating new database features (and products if needed) to meet scalability and global uptime requirements.
• Owning database backup and recovery, and helping establish disaster recovery targets and practices as the systems scale.
• Supporting, debugging, and performing RCA on production database issues, and participating in incident response as needed.

Required Qualifications

You'll be an experienced engineer with a BS in Computer Science or equivalent program, who enjoys solving complex technical challenges. You'll ideally have experience with:

• 5+ years of experience managing MySQL/CloudSQL at scale.
• Expert-level SQL and MySQL specifics, including schema design.
• Deep knowledge of MySQL internals.
• Solid understanding of MySQL replication, SQL tuning, and database optimization while minimizing downtime.
• Operating Google Cloud Spanner at scale, including schema design and query optimization.

Desirable Experience

We're particularly interested if you also have experience with:

• Payments experience (or related industry).
• The GCP toolset.
• Infrastructure as code.
• Redis.
• Global, multi-region deployments including sharding.

Benefits & Compensation

The base salary range for this role is $175,000 - $185,000. The salary range displayed reflects an average base salary range for the position across all the U.S. The base salary offered to an applicant could be higher or lower based on each applicant's specific skill set, depth of experience, relevant education or training, etc.
