Principal DevOps Specialist

Job Overview

We're looking for a highly autonomous DevOps professional who can take ownership of the DevOps practice within an engineering area and drive work forward without close supervision.

This is an individual contributor role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, driving technical improvements and working with minimal supervision. While there is no formal people management responsibility, this role requires technical leadership, ownership and the ability to influence engineers across multiple teams. Success in this position is measured less by following instructions and more by identifying what needs to be done and driving it forward.

Key Responsibilities

• Owning the DevOps domain within your engineering area.
• Defining priorities and driving technical initiatives from concept to implementation.
• Partnering closely with software engineering teams to improve delivery, reliability and operational excellence.
• Identifying gaps, risks and opportunities proactively rather than waiting for requirements to be defined.
• Improving engineering practices through automation, continuous improvement and platform evolution.
• Helping teams remove technical blockers and improve developer experience.
• Contributing to architectural and operational discussions across the wider engineering organisation.
• Translating ambiguous problems into clear technical actions and next steps.
• Identifying missing information, dependencies and risks early, and acting on them proactively.
• Driving backlog and delivery progress without needing day-to-day direction.
• Working across teams to unblock delivery and build alignment with the wider engineering organisation.

Required Qualifications

We're looking for someone who naturally takes ownership instead of waiting for direction, works confidently with minimal supervision, and enjoys solving ambiguous technical problems. You'll ideally have experience with:

• Container platforms.
• Cloud infrastructure.
• CI/CD pipelines and automation.
• Platform reliability and operational excellence.
• Observability and monitoring.
• Making sound technical decisions independently and communicating technical reasoning clearly.
• Proactively collaborating with people across the wider organisation to get things done.

Rather than matching every technology, we're looking for someone who can quickly understand complex environments and make effective technical decisions.
